Summary

As electrifying as it is heartbreaking, Sam Taylor's explosive fantasy debut We Are the Fire is perfect for fans of An Ember in the Ashes and the legend of Spartacus。

In the cold, treacherous land of Vesimaa, children are stolen from their families by a cruel emperor, forced to undergo a horrific transformative procedure, and serve in the army as magical fire-wielding soldiers。 Pran and Oksana―both taken from their homeland at a young age―only have each other to hold onto in this heartless place。

Pran dreams of one day rebelling against their oppressors and destroying the empire; Oksana only dreams of returning home and creating a peaceful life for them both。

When they discover the emperor has a new, more terrible mission than ever for their kind, Pran and Oksana vow to escape his tyranny once and for all。 But their methods and ideals differ drastically, driving a wedge between them。 Worse still, they both soon find that the only way to defeat the monsters that subjugated them may be to become monsters themselves。

Can we blame people for violence when it stems from having been abused themselves? How do we find a sense of belonging when alienated from home? Sam Taylor has written a heartfelt, exciting, propulsive, can’t-look-away fantasy with characters you’d die to protect。 (And on another note, in a book revolving around fire magic, I am extremely impressed with how many ways Sam Taylor found to describe the fires without ever delving into cliche or repetition。) 。。。more

We Are the Fire is an electrifying debut to behold。 Pran and Oksana are Tulliiobrets, humans transformed into demons who were taken from their family by the Emperor to protect their country。 In a world where their freedom is taken away time and time again, Pran and Oksana cling to each other as they dream of a future where they can be free of the Emperor and the fire magic that runs through their veins。 When their fellow Tulliis begin losing control of their powers and rising against their oppre We Are the Fire is an electrifying debut to behold。 Pran and Oksana are Tulliiobrets, humans transformed into demons who were taken from their family by the Emperor to protect their country。 In a world where their freedom is taken away time and time again, Pran and Oksana cling to each other as they dream of a future where they can be free of the Emperor and the fire magic that runs through their veins。 When their fellow Tulliis begin losing control of their powers and rising against their oppressors, Pran and Oksana become the leaders of a rebellion that could change everything for their people, but when they find their purposes at odds and suffer horrendous loss, Pran and Oksana risk endangering the very love that inspired them to dream of a better life。 Will Pran and Oksana win freedom for the Tulliis? Or will rebellion rip them apart at the seams? We Are the Fire was a really solid fantasy debut that stands out as unique because of its characters and its magic system。 What I really liked about Pran and Oksana was that they start out as a committed couple and remain together throughout the novel, albeit their love tested in unimaginable ways。 That isn't something you see often in both YA and Adult fantasies nowadays, so that was a refreshing change of pace。 I also really liked how both of them had to grapple with the great responsibility of leading a rebellion and the morally grey decisions they must make。 This book is paced pretty well。 From the start, Taylor kicks off this story with explosive action that instantly gives the reader a clue of to the projectory of the entire novel and what is at stakes。 The only thing I have to say that isn't as glowing is that I felt that the world building needed a little bit of fleshing out。 There were things explained, but other elements of their world felt discordant from the rest of it, and I had a hard time picturing it。 Also, the ending felt a bit abrupt。 But We Are the Fire is a fantastic debut novel that should no be missed, filled to the brim with intrigue, sacrifice, and two characters who would go to the ends of the earth for their people and for each other。 。。。more

Where's the drama? The biggest thing that made this story impossible for me to truly care about is that it's all about politics without making me care about the world。 So instead it's a slow moving, dry war story mixed with some relationship troubles。 It spends so much time talking about the war and political history in the first half I could barely pay attention。There are a few other things I disliked, like Sepp's addition in the story feeling like a substitute friend, and the fact that Pran refers to him and his family twice as having "brown skin" and yet he's a pale emo boy on the cover, but those are smaller details。Okay, so, what did I like?I like the concept。 Again, I came for genetically modified monster soldiers and though it didn't give m what I wanted, I do like the idea that this book stemmed from。And though there isn't much darkness, there's enough gray morality involved to have kept me reading。 I mean, had Pran not been quite to upset about his morally gray choices I probably would have liked them even better, but, still, gray is gray。I like Oksana, as a concept。 Though I don't really care about her in the context of this story, I think she has the makings of a really interesting character。 She's a beginner chemist with a close family relationship, who is equal parts ready to throw down and make smoke bombs as she is to be a source of comfort for those who are in the position she was once in。 Also, she transforms into a berserker by the end of this book, and that alone makes her awesome。The only other character I like is the doctor, who is actually interesting enough for me to care about (though I can't remember his name because I think my brain sort of turned off at random points while reading this)。 Here is my chaotic morally-gray character! Does he suck, like, from a narrative perspective? Yes, obviously。 But is he more interesting than a cardboard cut out? YES。 I wish he had been one of the main characters instead。I can see places where this story would have really worked for me, and there are choices I really liked, but this was definitely not a book I had a pleasant reading experiences with and wasn't one I managed to get invested in。 。。。more

We are the Fire by Sam Taylor is a YA fantasy read with a unique premise。 Pran and Oskana, the main POV characters, are Tuliikobrets, fire wielding soldiers of the Vesimaan empire。 Instead of some books where the MCs would start as enemies or something and end up in a relationship, this book started with them in a relationship and the events of the story put their bond to the test。 I really liked the world building this book, and the idea of how ordinary people can be mutated into a Tuliikobrets We are the Fire by Sam Taylor is a YA fantasy read with a unique premise。 Pran and Oskana, the main POV characters, are Tuliikobrets, fire wielding soldiers of the Vesimaan empire。 Instead of some books where the MCs would start as enemies or something and end up in a relationship, this book started with them in a relationship and the events of the story put their bond to the test。 I really liked the world building this book, and the idea of how ordinary people can be mutated into a Tuliikobrets。 The army rankings (Imp, Hellion, Nightmare) were really fun and innovative too。 Rootare is one of my favorite book villains this year。 However, the reason its not a 5 star read for me is because the storyline seemed very predictable。 I like to be surprised and kept on the edge of my seat but this book didn't do that for me。 Despite this, I will still be reading future releases from Sam Taylor as I think she has a bright future in writing and I'm excited to read what she comes out with next。 。。。more

This was a difficult story to read。 In a world where children are routinely separated from their families, this definitely hit close to home。 Sam Taylor does an excellent job in making the despair and hopelessness of our characters feel visceral。 With every tragedy and difficult choice your heart breaks right along with them。 It delivers a singular message: Monsters aren't simply born。 Monsters are made by those who nurture them。 The alternate POVs was done very well。 What I found most interesti This was a difficult story to read。 In a world where children are routinely separated from their families, this definitely hit close to home。 Sam Taylor does an excellent job in making the despair and hopelessness of our characters feel visceral。 With every tragedy and difficult choice your heart breaks right along with them。 It delivers a singular message: Monsters aren't simply born。 Monsters are made by those who nurture them。 The alternate POVs was done very well。 What I found most interesting was that not only did Pran and Oksana have their own distinct voice, but their impressions of each other were wildly different from how they viewed themselves, which can happen so often in intimate relationships。 For example, Oksana wishes for Pran's talent to inspire hope, yet he always feels he has failed his fellow soldiers and cannot overcome his physical weaknesses。 Conversely, Pran sees Oksana as a fierce warrior when she is continuously doubting her own self worth and purpose。All in all, this was an enjoyable standalone story。 The world felt whole and thoroughly fleshed out。 I would have liked to learn more about Scamall and the war this fire army was designed to fight, but this story isn't about the war。 It's about what happens to soldiers once the fighting is over。 。。。more

The map in the book is one of my favorites(designed by the author and I have to say that takes some serious skill!)。 There were so many different lands that had different nationalities and cultures that are similar and reminded me a lot of different countries in our world。 There was a lot of detail put into those different lands, and the people that were from them, I found it utterly fascinating! Now the story。 I mean this book had so much heartache and heartbreak in it, it was almost too difficult to read。 What the commanders did to the children, and those who broke rules, and the experiments, it was awful and so so sad。 Pran suffers from a bad leg due to the injections he received all the time, it’s terrible! To grow up in a place like this, and become what people call monsters, I can see people cracking or becoming the monster everyone sees them as。 Amazingly Pran and Oksana were not mean or evil, in fact they did everything they could to help younger ones to avoid being beaten or killed。 It was interesting to read a book that starts off with the main characters already in love。 The relationship between Pran and Oksana was so beautiful and so cute。 They truly cherished each other, and would do anything for the other, even at the expense of their own lives, or to do terrible things, just so the other may live and be free。 To watch them try to not become monsters and how it tears them apart when they both have different views on their approach to end the emperors rule was heartbreaking to read。 I was rooting for them the whole book。 I highly recommend this book。 It is not a light read, defiantly on the darker side, but it is a beautiful story of two people who want a better world for each other, their families, and their people, and what they and the hard decisions they make in order for that dream to become a reality。 。。。more

Edelweiss ARC read: It's a bit unfair to compare this, or any debut novel, to Ember in the Ashes。 The two books despite having soldiers as leads and an oppressive Empire are very different。 This book can serve as a good transition book from middle grade fantasy to young adult fantasy, but does not provide depth into much outside the main characters' goal to return to their homelands。 I found Pran and Oksana's relationship refreshing for its lack of cringe and angst。 Thank you for that。 Edelweiss ARC read: It's a bit unfair to compare this, or any debut novel, to Ember in the Ashes。 The two books despite having soldiers as leads and an oppressive Empire are very different。 This book can serve as a good transition book from middle grade fantasy to young adult fantasy, but does not provide depth into much outside the main characters' goal to return to their homelands。 I found Pran and Oksana's relationship refreshing for its lack of cringe and angst。 Thank you for that。 。。。more
